... Ignore that critique-like comment down there. I think that this animation is great. Besides, like you said, you didn't like the graphics of the game, so you did something different and that follows my philosophy: if you don't like something, do something about it.
I mean, this must have took you hours, no...days. More than that, but anyway, I like what you did here. I like how different things look from the games. You've also added your own style, the whole point of fan work. As my parents would say, "Keep on keepin' on" --with the good work, that is.
It's... GOOD, but I can't go as far as to call it better (or even as good) than Sonic 4. What is this? It's a flashy and VERY intricate remake of Green/Emerald Hill Zone. Just like what Sonic Fan Remix did. But in truth, the design is... lacking. And that's all that this animation really has going for it. Speaking of animation, this hardly is. It's more of just images sliding across the screen - good ones, mind you - and few objects (rings and birds) with restricted-looking movement. Heck, the birds are more animated than Sonic and Dr.Eggman. Yes, I did just call him Dr.Eggman. Either way, what you made here is in NO WAY bad, in fact it's very great. It's just that when you compared it to Sonic 4... you gotta expect others to actually stand up for it, man. Still, I like what you've made here, and I assume that you've already made even better work.
Not bad, (I like the instramental boss music remix, who made it?) looks good, and well animated. I have to critique a few things. I think the palm trees, and certain things don't really look much like an actual Sonic game, and look more hand-drawn to me. (Not that it's a bad thing, really.) I think the background platforms, and shuttle loops are a nice touch, but look a bit overly stylized. The bubbly background clouds also look more like they belong in a Mario game then a Sonic one to me. Of course, the whole thing still looks nice regardless.
In regards to neerly everyone above in the comments criticizing the graphics style in Sonic 4, and saying this looks "better" then the real thing, I have to strongly disagree personally. No offense, Tony. Your version is nice, and nicely done, but I don't see how the graphics in the real Sonic 4 are that "bad" personally. I like 'em just fine actually. (Just my preferences, I guess.)
Also, you're wrong on one thing, they arn't 3D polygons, from what I read in interviews, the characters & stuff are actually 2D, but rendered & animated to look 3D like the old "Donkey Kong Country" games. It's a bit ironic people are quick to condemn that graphics style, considering there was always some 3D-style rendering effects in the old Sega Genesis Sonic games, even in Sonic 1. (Remember those low-polygon-looking palm trees, the square indents in the ground, shine & shading effects on robot enemies, and such?)
Sorry, if I'm coming off as being a bit "aggressive," just voicing my difference of opinion.
Man, now that is how you HD 2D Sonic. If I were seriously considering it as "Sonic 4," I'd have to say it's a little too busy for my liking, but it's sure dazzling to look at. Definitely a better direction than what they went with. If only!
Great job on this! I like the redesigned 2d look. Only if it were a real game, I'd say get rid of all that forground stuff (it's a little distracting), zoom the camera closer in, and remove the sun from the background because for you to be able to see it toward the horizon like that it would be either dawn or dusk.
But this is good. I haven't seen anything out of the 3 seconds of game clips I've seen from the actual game that made me think it looked so terrible but eh. We'll just have to wait.
